I’ve done a lot of dumb stuff in my life…

But this mistake is definitely on the top of the list. What happened?

I got lucky…

2 months ago I signed a BIG TIME social media influencer for ghostwriting and email.

But this mission was a lot different…

How?

I had to write on a platform that I can’t stand…

Which platform?

..Drum roll please…

Instagram (gross I know). The funny thing is I didn’t even know people read on Instagram.

Anyway before I tell you the problems of marketing written content on a video platform…

I have to tell you this big mistake…

You see Reader I was lazy. Like a 300lb person passed out on the couch covered in potato chip crumbs lazy.

I wrote a carousel for this influencer whose content normally gets +3,000 likes…

And this carousel?

Only got 137 likes…ouch.

My client was not happy. I was a little confused…

So here’s the lesson I learned the hard way about writing content on different platforms (so you don’t make the same mistake I did)…

You gotta study the competition.

After my screwup, my client and I’s contract was almost destroyed. So I scrambled and did my homework. I looked at every influencer in my client’s niche only to discover one thing…

The discovery?

That my client’s competition had terrible content. Or so I thought…

What I realized is that the markets on X and LinkedIn are more sophisticated. The more specific and unique your content is on X and LinkedIn the better…

But Instagram is a different animal. Instagram is what marketers call “top of funnel”. That means that people on Instagram prefer vague, general, bland, but easy-to-understand content.

Stuff like “5 ways to free your mind… #1 put the phone down”

Now I don’t know about you Reader…

…But that content makes me sick.

Anywhooooo…

I wrote a simple story for my client and the lesson was about “with the right mindset you can achieve anything”…

Something that would make people on X angry…

The results?

It went freaking viral. My client’s best post ever.

So here’s the deal…

You gotta know your marketplace…

…Or in this case social media platform…

Study the competition, create a swipe file or what works, and even though the content may make you cringe…

…People will pay you lots of money for it…

Catch ya on the flip side,

-Parker
