At the awards ceremony I was approached by a lady who wanted to ask me a question. Her timidity didn't fit with her demeanor which to my experience was that she'd retired as a school teacher or nurse or administrator of a small business. She wanted to know if entering the contest was an act of worship to Voo Doo. I told her no. The contest was a community arts event, nothing more.

She said that's what her friend told her that I would say, to trick her into worshipping false gods. I assured her that it was nothing more than a way for the creative people in the community to express themselves and meet their neighbors. I asked which was her entry and she reminded me that I needed to remain impartial and declined to answer.

The second place entry was a beautiful long throated bottle tied with ribbons and filled with multi-colored glass balls. All entries came with a 3x5 card explanation. The second place winner had written:
"At X-Mas I was told that I have ovarian cancer. My voodoo doll must kill the growing cancer tumors before they kill me. Inside the bottle are the cancer cells." The second place winner was the woman who was worried about worshipping Voo Doo.
